Ranching for Profit Workshop — Aug. 20-21

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT | Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center, Sandpoint ID

  • Cost $40 per person (partial scholarships available)
  • Lunch on Day 1 and drinks both days will be provided. Lunch on Day 2 is on your own.

Andrew Morris, instructor, will lead this two-day workshop. Ranchers will learn valuable techniques to increase the financial sustainability of their operations ad increase profits through direct and intermediated sales.

Workshop topics include

  • Background on ranching profitability
  • Restructuring your ranch for profitbility
  • Evaluating success
  • Financial priciples
  • Understanding the balance sheet
  • Key financial ratios
  • Employee structure

Ranchers Eileen Napier and Stan Hayes will add to the conversation by sharing their experience at in Ione, Washington.

This workshop is for ranchers looking to transform their operation into a profitable business with less work and less stress while improving rangeland health and productivity.

  • Cattle harvest and fabrication demonstration; sensory evaluation of various beef cuts
  • Tour a commercial, USDA–inspected beef packing plant in central Washington or southern Idaho

  • Different market strategies to improve overall sales
  • Improve prices at livestock market auction
  • Record keeping (QuickBooks, Excel)
  • Generate statements such as profit and loss, cost of production per animal and on farm inventory

  • Funding assistance (Farm Service Agency, AgWest, Natural Resources Conservation Service)

  • Beginning ranchers will meet experienced ranchers to find industry mentors (10+ years of ranching experience in the same region)
  • Participants can shadow their mentor to see other facilities and learn other cattle management techniques
  • Mentors will be a resource for participants to answer questions, making contacts
